FACEBOOK WIPES THOUSANDS OF PAGES
ACT Writers urges Australians to support organisations affected by Facebook’s broad ban on Australian news content, by heading directly to websites and alternative social media platforms. Below are links to just a handful of organisations caught up in today’s social media chaos.
Many arts organisations, not-for-profits and community organisations have been ensnared in Facebook’s blockage of Australian users and publishers from viewing or sharing news. Facebook’s move is in response to Australia’s proposed media bargaining code. Vastly more organisations than expected have been affected by the ban, and while some unwinding is taking place, this shift in Australia’s social media landscape is significant.
For many creative organisations, Facebook is a major platform for connecting with audiences; hosting special groups; publicising and live-casting events; promoting their offerings and sharing their news. The removal of this platform has a significant impact.
Remember to head directly to websites, and follow other social media channels such as Instagram, Twitter, Tik-Tok, LinkedIn, SnapChat, Youtube and Vimeo, and support the organisations whose content you value. Make sure you sign-up for e-newsletters and bulletins that keep organisations connected with audiences. We need to come together as a creative arts community and work around this ‘vanishing’ content.
These links will be regularly updated while we navigate this action by Facebook and its impact across sectors. We can’t capture all wiped pages here, however, while this action continues we will include links to any organisations we encounter who have had their Facebook page restricted.
