The Canberra Airport Recognition Award for Literacy Inclusion celebrates individuals, organisations, or initiatives that have made a significant contribution to advancing literacy and inclusion in the ACT region.

Established in partnership with Canberra Airport, this award recognises innovative and impactful efforts to break down barriers to literacy—whether through education, community engagement, publishing, advocacy, or creative practice. It honours those who champion access, amplify underrepresented voices, and foster a more inclusive literary culture.

Recipients may include educators, writers, community leaders, publishers, librarians, or grassroots programs whose work demonstrates a deep commitment to inclusive literacy and social impact.

The award reflects Canberra Airport’s ongoing support for community-building and MARION’s mission to ensure that all voices have the opportunity to be heard and celebrated through the written word.

Thanks to the Canberra Airport the recipient will receive an award of $2,000 AUD.

  • Thursday 3 July – The award recipient will be announced at the ACT Literary Awards Night, held at the Shine Dome, Australian Academy of Science, ANU, Canberra.

Terms + Conditions

1. Purpose of the Award

The Canberra Airport Recognition Award for Literacy Inclusion celebrates the contributions of educators, community leaders, and organisations working to improve access to literacy in the ACT and surrounding regions, particularly where access is impacted by disability, cultural marginalisation, or geographic isolation.

2. Eligibility

- Nominations must be submitted on behalf of another person or organisation. Self-nominations are not accepted.

- Nominees must reside, work, or operate primarily within the region defined by the ACT Literary Awards eligibility criteria, including the ACT and specific surrounding areas of south-eastern NSW. For the purposes of these awards, this region is defined as (see map).

- Nominees may be individuals or organisations engaged in literacy-focused education, advocacy, or community engagement.

3. Nomination Requirements

- Nominations must be submitted via the official form and received by 1pm Friday 13 June 2025.

- Late or incomplete nominations may not be considered.

- Accurate contact details must be provided for both the nominee and nominator.

- Supporting materials and testimonials are optional but encouraged.

4. Selection and Judging

- Nominations will be assessed by a panel convened by MARION.

- One recipient — an individual or organisation — will be selected based on the quality, impact, and inclusivity of their work in the field of literacy.

- The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

5. Award Presentation

- The recipient will be announced at the 2025 ACT Literary Awards on Thursday 3 July at the Shine Dome, Canberra.

- The award includes a $2,000 cash prize, funded by Canberra Airport.

- For individual recipients, the prize is awarded in recognition of their contribution. It is not tied to a specific project, but recipients are encouraged to consider how the funds might support their continued work.

- For organisations, the funds are also provided as recognition, with no formal restrictions. However, recipients are encouraged to direct the award toward initiatives that further support literacy inclusion in their community.

6. Use of Information

- By submitting a nomination, the nominator confirms they have the nominee’s consent to share their details and describe their work.

- Selected nominees may be contacted for further information or to participate in promotional or media coverage related to the award.

7. Privacy

- All personal information will be handled in accordance with MARION’s privacy policy and used solely for administering this award.
