Momentum

Mum tells us stories
She says
They killed a horse.
A beautiful grey mare – just over there, it was. She
was training to be a vet and had to do it

My sister says maybe it was a therapy horse
They bring them into hospitals sometimes

I don’t think so

A nurse walks past the door
In that way
That they have
Intention in each
Sensible
Shoe
Step

The opposite of
Momentum
That rumbling slide
That has brought us here,
Sitting around the bed
Wondering

I need to get out of here, mum says
I need to get home

Her arms are blotched
Pale skin looking in parts
Like an overcast sky
On a beach day
Where you don’t mind if it’s rainy
You weren’t going to swim anyway
You came to watch the weather roll in

We know, we know. Soon, we say.
But we don't know a thing
We are in momentum
Moment
To moment

But I know that I see
Not a nurse this time
But a flick of tail
Unhurried, careful hooves
Moving with intention Down hospital halls

And I put my hand On her hand
And we sit and wait
