AWARDS, GRANTS, FUNDING
ACT REGION
Arts funding managed by artsACT is one of the main ways the ACT Government provides direct support to the arts. Funding supports individual artists, arts organisations and community groups and responds directly to the 2015 ACT Arts Policy. It is delivered through a number of categories, and supports high quality work across a broad range of artforms and practices. Arts Activities Funding is available through two categories:
- Up to $5k Funding: is open all year round.
- $5-50k Funding: two rounds per year
ACT REGION
The Capital Arts Patrons’ Organisation is a volunteer non-profit organisation that has supported the ACT region’s artists for over 35 years. Since establishment in 1983, CAPO has disbursed over $2.3 million as arts fellowships and awards with support from the Canberra arts and business communities.
Creative grants are on offer from CAPO on an annual basis. Recent literary awards have included the Cook Creative Writing Prize.
NATIONAL
The Australia Council for the Arts supports the excellence, diversity and vitality of Australian literature. A variety of funding opportunities are offered annualy for individuals and organisations.
We support the creation and development of new work through grants directly to writers and to the publishing industry, literary magazines and journals. We also provide grants to organisations and programs that contribute to the skills and professional development of Australian writers and the development and presentation of their work. - The Australia Council for the Arts
NATIONAL
The Cultural Fund provides invaluable Publishing Industry Career Development Grants to Australian publishers, freelancers and literary agents and offers Create Grants to individual writers and visual artists to create new work. They also offer career-sustaining Fellowships for mid-career and established authors, and a dedicated Reading Australia Fellowship for English and literacy teachers.
Their priority is to ensure that writers and visual artists are better supported and are paid appropriately for their creative endeavours. They also offer grants to leading organisations to help build literacy skills for children and young adults.
OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE YOUR WORK
Cicerone Journal is a Canberra-based publication founded in 2018 that seeks to encourage an open curiosity about the world in a socio-political climate of disconnection and disenchantment. They aim to publish writing that is exploratory and thoughtful, and new and unusual.
Woroni has been the Australian National University student newspaper since 1950, Woroni Radio was established in 2012 and Woroni TV was launched in 2017. They
aim to produce interesting, entertaining, informative and regular content across print, multimedia, radio and online media platforms.
demos journal is a volunteer-run progressive journal for emerging writers. demos publishes a variety of forms, including poetry, long-form articles, essays, short stories, mixed media creative writing, interviews, features, book reviews, memoirs and other non-conventional forms.
Founded in 2015, Recent Work Press is a small press imprint based in the ACT, Australia. They publish mainly poetry and other short-form textual work. publish a diverse range of authors from Australia and internationally. Recent Work Press aren’t offering a submission window in 2021 however keep an eye out for future opportunities. This is a press with plenty of passion and an extensive range of inspiring publications. You can purchase their publications online.
Smith’s Alternative is situated in the iconic Melbourne Building in the heart of Civic, Canberra’s city centre. Smith's purpose is to celebrate local culture and provide a safe and comfortable place for it to be developed, presented and appreciated. Smiths hold weekly poetry events including the extremely popular That Poetry Thing with open mic opportunities as well as regular book launches and other creative events.
