Frequently Asked Questions
What is MARION?
MARION is a member-based, not-for-profit literary organisation and registered charity based in the ACT, supporting writers and readers through events, outreach, fellowships, prizes, and professional development programs.
Who can join MARION?
Anyone with an interest in writing, reading, or supporting literature can join us whether you’re a published author, emerging writer, or passionate reader.
Is MARION only for writers in Canberra?
While we were founded and are based on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country, we welcome members from across Australia and offer tailored programs for regional and remote writers.
How did MARION get its name?
In 2022, we changed our trading name from ACT Writers Centre to better reflect our evolving identity as an organisation that reaches beyond constructed boundaries, while remaining deeply committed to writers in the ACT region and surrounds. MARION is more than a name; it stands for Mentorship, Advocacy, Representation, Imagination, Outreach, and Nurture. While not named after any single individual, it honours people whose contributions have shaped our organisation and cultural landscape, including our late patron Marion Halligan, writer Marian Eldridge, and many others.
