A founder of Going Down Swinging (1980-1994), a managing editor at Five Islands Press (2007-2020), Patron of Melbourne Poets Union (2004-2024), he is Director of the Five Islands Prize for a first book of poetry. Emeritus Professor at the University of Melbourne, he received an Order of Australia (AM) for services to education and creative writing in 2021.

Marunta- Spirit name: father, grandfather, brother, moved to Canberra from Sydney 13 months ago. Although with no formal training pre Covid, Marunta played with improvised words and ideas at Lentils, a Newtown Cafe and has continued his improvisation at Smiths Poetry Thing where he is much appreciated and applauded for his playfulness and clever word smithing (if you'll excuse the pun). He has Done too many courses, played too much sport, and at 80 says his creaky body still recognises the value of finding a voice and creating different ways to express it! And we are glad he does!
