Ginsights: Sarah St Vincent Welch

Ginsights with Sarah St Vincent Welch

6-8pm Thursday 3 October

Big River Distilling Co and Paperchain Bookstore Canberra co-host Ginsights with guest author Samia Goudie.  Samia, who identifies as a Queer Bundjalung woman, was removed and grew up on Ngunnawal/ Ngambri country where she now lives and writes.

On Thursday 3 October from 6-8pm Big River Distilling Co and Paperchain Bookstore will host Ginsights with guest author Sarah St Vincent Welch. Sarah is from Sydney where she was a member of No Regrets women writers workshop and the Sydney Poets Union. She has been based in Canberra since 1987 where she has been a writer, editor, writing teacher and image maker, known for her short fiction and poetry.  Sarah is one of the organisers of That Poetry Thing That Is On At Smith’s Every Monday, an event that builds the profile of poetry in our city.

Sarah has a longstanding commitment to developing other writers through community workshops and a stint of academic teaching. She has been awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council.

Sarah has a knack for engaging the community in writing projects that embrace social change. She wrote the poem “Blue Tree in Lyons” for the Blue Tree Project, a national project that seeks to change how we talk about mental health. She founded the Kindred Trees project, which celebrates Canberra trees through poetry. Her guest author appearance at Ginsights is occurring in amongst her participation in the Canberra Art Biennial 2024 Festival sharing her #litchalk practice in which she chalks her poems on footpaths.

At Ginsights we will hear readings of Sarah’s poetry from her recent publications “Open” and “chalk borders”, that will be sure to provoke ideas, prompt reflections and generate laughter.

All are welcome to come along to join this informal reader/writer conversation at Big River Distillery at Tenancy 3 Building 3 at 1 Dairy Road Fyshwick. Use entry 2 off Dairy Rd and find us down near carpark P4.

 Bookings required, tickets $5.
