Acting Detective Sergeant Clara Mode loves the smell of risk, but is every risk worth taking?

Mode lives in a converted van with her freshly permed hair and a slight persecution complex. She knows it’s hard to get respect as a woman in 1982, let alone as the only female detective in the region.

When she is sent to another ‘soft case’ at an archaic boarding school, it becomes clear that there is something more sinister at play. Despite the warnings, she can’t resist her chance to shine…


About the Author

Anastasia Tyler is a recognised crime writer. While she has had several careers, from communications and media liaison, it was her career mastering the dark arts of high school teaching that brought to life her passion for the power of a compelling story and an intriguing character. She taught English and humanities for 15 years, achieving status of Teacher of Exemplary Practice (NT) and Master Teacher (QLD). Currently based in Canberra, Australia, Anastasia works as a Hansard editor. Anastasia grew up in England and moved to Australia as a teenager.  Since then, she has lived in most corners of the country. Throughout her travels, writing is a constant.
