The Shadow of Ghosts

Australis Press, 2025

The Shadow of Ghosts is the first volume by Australian poet K. M. (Kathy) Preston containing new and published works written over the space of three decades. The Shadow of Ghosts, offers a vivid, telling, and moving insight into human experience, born from wise and intimate observation and a palpable affection for the Australian landscape.

K. M. Preston’s poems range widely across aspects of life in rural Australia, giving equal attention to the deeply personal and to the general, even the global. She moves eloquently from memories of individual farm dogs, to poems that express the energy of rivers, fragments of family holidays, and experiences that run from the quotidian to the numinous: all of it with emotion, but without sentiment.
