Tanka poems are short lyrical poems written in five lines. On the surface they may appear incredibly simple but there is a lot going on inside these tiny poems. The Lyrebird Tanka Circle formed when in 2021 when Kathy Kituai reluctantly decided to close Limestone Tanka Poets, a group she founded and ran for ten years until 2021. The name is based on the Lyrebird's ability to sing in many different voices and the circle represents a collaborative approach to facilitation and decision making. The group meets monthly to discuss and workshop all things tanka in a creative and supportive environment. Lyrebird poets feature regularly in Australian and overseas tanka journals and anthologies and have been recognised in international competitions.
