THAT POETRY THING - Mother Tongue
Multilingual Poetry + Open Mic

7-9pm Monday 10 February
(Doors open 6:30pm)
Smith’s Alternative, Canberra

Enjoy a feast of languages at our first multilingual poetry open mic for 2025. FEATURING Japanese Tanka.

Naoko and John Lamb will lead us through the poetry of Canberra's own CJC Blue Bells Tanka Group. They will perform their popular 'Teaching Tanka', followed by readings by other members of the Blue Bells Tanka Group, including original poems by Chieko Kawabata and Mihoko Fukui, and two recent Tanka by Naoko Lamb.

All welcome to sign up for a spot in an OPEN MIC segment. No experience required - only the willingness to perform in a language other than English, or a mix of English and non-English. Whether you are a fluent speaker or have a smattering of another language, we invite you to share your words with us.

Open mic presenters each have up to 4 minutes, all styles from traditional to contemporary welcome, and you can read or recite an original poem or a piece by another poet/writer. To book a spot email mothertonguemic@gmail.com.

NOTE: Please always confirm full details with event hosts for non MARION events when arranging tickets as programs may change at short notice.
