The Book Cow Bookshop: Election and Party

3pm Saturday, 21 May 2022

Join us to celebrate democracy - with our own election and count with Krys Saclier

About this event

Bit bored by the 6 week election campaign? Looking for a way to make the festival of democracy fun and engaging.

At the Book Cow we believe that everyone should play a role in our democracy. Sadly, kids are not able to vote in the upcoming federal election – So we thought we would run our own Book Cow Bookshop election.

And to ensure that it is run properly we decided to bring an expert election counter and our very own ‘Antony Green’ – Krys Saclier.

Krys is a local Canberra author and election aficionado to supervise our election and run the count on Saturday 21 May 2022 at 3pm at the Book Cow.

Krys also wrote the kids book on elections Vote For Me. Vote 4 Me is a great introduction to elections and voting for students, orienting them to the idea of democracy in a familiar scenario, with characters they will recognise from their own school. It is illustrated by Cathy Wilcox, the brilliant political cartoonist for The Sydney Morning Herald.

What do you have to do??

• If you’re under the age of 18 years come into the Book Cow and pick up a ballot paper. Number your candidates from 1 to 5 (don’t forget to number all the squares – just like a real election) and drop it into our ballot box for it to be counted on the day.

• Cannot make it into the shop?? Don't worry - vote online via our online form HERE. We will fill out your ballot and put in the box (trust us - we have Becky the Book Cow as Electoral Commissioner - she is very trustworthy).

• Drop by on Saturday 21 May 2022 at 3pm at the Book Cow to watch Krys perform the count of the election and announce the winning candidate!! Or if you cannot make it in store we will stream it online via Instagram live - just like the real election night!!

• To help celebrate there will be cupcakes – but we promise no long political speeches from the candidates!!

Krys Saclier believes children’s literature has the power to shape the future. She has written for television, radio and press and is the creator of the Kids Only podcast. She is a committee member of the ACT Branch of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and is a founding member of the Canberra Children’s Writers’ Group.
