Behrouz Boochani is an award-winning Kurdish-Iranian writer, journalist and filmmaker whose memoir, No Friend But The Mountains was written during his lengthy incarceration by the Australian Government in Manus Island prison, Papua New Guinea.
In 2019 No Friend But the Mountains, won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Prize, the NSW Premier’s Literary Prize, the National Biography Award and the ABIA General Non-Fiction Book of the Year. In his memoir, he gives a first-hand account of the anguish of incarceration and exile. Robert Manne hailed it as ‘the most important Australian book published in 2018’.
In 2023, not only is Boochani free, he’s also a multi-award-winning author, documentary maker, humanitarian and scholar. His words, and those of other writers and activists, have changed lives, his own included. And they’ve helped keep us accountable.
Behrouz’s visit to Australia is sponsored by PEN International and he hopes to draw attention to the continuing plight of refugees in Australia and around the world, the humanitarian and financial cost.
