Vale John Stokes
Distinguished author, essayist, and poet, John Karl Stokes, passed away peacefully at Canberra Aged Care on the 15th of May, at the age of 81. Known for his kind, gentle, and poetic nature, John leaves behind a legacy of immense creativity.
John was a prolific writer whose works were widely published not only in Australia but also internationally. His literary contributions garnered significant recognition through awards and shortlisting for prestigious honours such as the Blake and Rosemary Dobson prizes for poetry. His early career included training in the visual arts and various professions such as cartography, land surveying, town and river planning, and environmental design. These diverse experiences enriched his literary voice, which often explored complex themes with clarity and resonance.
Through his work, John never shied away from addressing contentious subjects. His bold and expressive verse tackled the plain truths about love, sex, and chaos, capturing the essence of human experience amidst life’s storms. His collection Fire in the Afternoon (Halstead Press, 2014) is a testament to his ability to convey profound truths with a clear, resonant voice.
John Stokes will be remembered not only for his literary achievements but also for the gentle and poetic spirit that touched all who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of writers and readers. He was a devoted partner of Jennifer (dec.) and Marion (dec.) and loving father, father-in-law and grandfather to Nick, Jason, Philippa, Paula, Jennifer and Carla.
A service to honour John’s life will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, May 24, at Norwood Park Crematorium in Mitchell, ACT. Friends, family, and admirers of his work are invited to pay their respects.
