Scam Alert

MARION urges writers to be cautious of scams

MARION would like our members to be aware of a trend which has seen online scammers targeting writers. While many such schemes are easily detected, some are more sophisticated. Below are some of the details of scams that have come to our attention and an online resource that you can use to protect yourself from exploitation.

Several writers have reported receiving unsolicited emails purporting to be from literary contacts, for example the senior staff members of major publishing companies. Emails may offer to connect the writer with an agent or discuss an upcoming project, and may refer to the writer’s previous work. The names used may belong to real publishers, editors, and agents from reputable companies.

MARION is aware that scams following patterns similar to the above have been targeted at writers in our region and elsewhere. The use of AI can make detection trickier. We urge our members to be cautious when dealing with such requests, and to check carefully the names of companies and individuals, as well as details such as the domains of email addresses which may indicate that messages are fraudulent.

Writer Beware is one resource which may help with detecting schemes of this nature. It includes lists of names and email addresses associated with known publishing scams, and the agents and agencies commonly referred to.  A list of warning signs for detecting impersonation is also included.
