Julie Koh

Julie is the author of two short-story collections: Capital Misfits and Portable Curiosities. She was a 2017 Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Australian Novelist. Her short stories have been published widely, including in the Best Australian Stories and Best Australian Comedy Writing. She has written two radio plays for ABC Radio National and the libretto for the satirical opera Chop Chef. She has also judged several literary awards including the 2018 Stella Prize and the 2022 and 2023 Steele Rudd Awards. She has been a peer assessor for Creative Australia and is the current Fiction Editor for Westerly.

Julie is interested in mentoring because she would enjoy supporting an early-career writer to develop their writing practice and take a deep dive into their work/s in progress. As an author who began her career without connections in the Australian literary world, Julie is looking forward to sharing with her mentee lessons she has learned—through more than a decade of trial and error—that will be of value in navigating the industry and the ups and downs of the writing journey.

Julie’s area of interest is any genre of fiction, however, her expertise lies in literary fiction. She is a short-story specialist but has experience in mentoring writers who are working in longer forms. Julie would be a particularly good match for writers incorporating experimental, speculative and/or comedic/satirical elements into their work.

Mentorship with Julie will commence in November 2024.
